about

alberta soranzoI didn't set out to work in IT—my background is in humanities, and my first job was in an advertising agency. I was assigned my first IT project, designing and implementing a new Mac network, in 1989, when the company's network and DB administrator quit and took the client database with him. If I remember correctly, he also took one or two rolls of coax cable. Crazy times, made even more interesting by the fact tha computers didn't have hard drives, and floppy disks did it all.

After that first, exhilarating experience—which involved assorted power tools, yards of wire and a lot of sweat, I never looked back.

I started developing databases in FoxPro and DBIII, installing and maintaining servers and, in general, spending a lot of time waiting for the web to happen.

When email and Internet browsing became available I convinced my then boss that we needed to enter the 21st century, bought a modem and started racking up huge phone bills.

I moved to the US in 1998 and I landed a job as DBA, again at an advertising agency, but soon it became clear that the web was my real passion. Since late '98 I have worked at a major four-year university, initially as a digital editing lab manager and, more recently, as systems and DB administrator and web producer.

I also work as a freelance web developer/producer, and you can see some of my work here.

I live in Southern California and in my not so-abundant spare time, I read, surf and play ice hockey.
